Discussion:
How do I get a national insurance number?

I was born in the UK

I have a British Passport. I am a British Citizen.

How on earth do I get a National Insurance number?

I moved abroad when I was a baby (4 months old).

Do I just walk into a governemnt office & ask for a NI number? Does it
take weeks & weeks?

I am moving (permanently) to Boston, but want to stay here for about 11
months.

(I'd rather not work 'cash-in-hand' as it's less easy to pay tax)

Help, please!

What's wrong with Lincolnshire???

I think it's a beautiful county. It's steeped in history. Lincoln was
recorded in the Doomsday book, some of the Da Vinci Code was filmed at
Lincoln Cathedral, the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Boston to America,
there's the Boston Stump, Gibraltar Point, The Lincolnshire Wolds, Grimsby,
Cleethorpes, oh... and Skegness! Three British Superbike teams are based in
Lincolnshire too. Most veg that is bought around the country
(fresh/frozen/canned) is grown in the county. I could go on....

Technically, Grimsby and Cleethorpes have not been in Lincolnshire
since Humberside was formed in the '70s. (Unless they changed it back
again after I left :-)

I think Humberside is defunct and North Humberside is now part of the
East Riding, not sure about South Humberside though.

You go to your local social security office and ask nicely.
They will want to interview you , mostly to establish that you are a UK
citizen entitled to one , and to check that you need one.
I don't knwo how long it takes for it to then arrive.

Actually, if you go to the Jobcentre Plus Office they will give you a
telephone number you need to ring to book an appointment for a National
Insurance Number interview. (Unfortunately I don't remember the phone number
off the top of my head.) National Insurance Numbers will only be given to
people who (a) Are actively seeking work and can prove they are, (b)
Actually working and can provide payslips/letter from employer etc, or (c)
have made a claim to a UK benefit that they will be entitled to. You also
obviously need to prove your identity.

Come to think about it, if you have previously lived in the UK, did either
of your parents ever claim Child Benefit for you in the UK? If they did,
there may already be a National Insurance Number already allocated to you.
If that is the case, you may not need a full interview and someone may be
able to do a specialist trace on their system to see if there is already one
for you. If Child Benefit was paid for you, it may be worth you explaining
this to the person you speak to when you ring the number that the Jobcentre
Plus person will give you.

If you have to have the full interview, it can take several weeks for your
National Insurance Number to be allocated to you. But you should be told how
long you have to wait for it at the interview.

That will do not good whatsoever.

Thinking of some towns I know, the Town Hall is

a a concert hall
b empty, having been a pub
c doesn't exist and never has
d knocked down and a shopping centre built on the site.

I can't actually think of any town (there must be some I know) with a
town hall containing the local government offices.

Town Hall related services keep a record of birth certificates, at least
they did for me. On the Birth certificate is a number called your National
Health Number, not NI number. Surely records are related through that number
and through reords of birth's and deaths and marriages etc.

Maybe some county/borough etc. councils have different setups.

It couldn't hurt to try the town hall.

But if the DWP office is where to go then that is where to go.

I would try the town hall first, or whatever the local government offices
call themselves where you are.

<<On the Birth certificate is a number called your National

That was the theory but since then some bright spark thought ... lets
change everyone's NHS number! So whatever is on the birth certificate is
no longer the person's NHS number.

Because that isn't part of their remit.

Such records are held by the registrars offices not the town hall.

But even then, they can't issue NI numbers, they only hold the records
showing you were born and registered there.

NI numbers are issued nationally, probably by the DWP (department of
Work and Pensions) nowadays, although it used to be the DHSS when that
existed.

If we ever have such a thing, they might just be able to.

But we most certainly don't have anything even remotely approaching
one-shop-national-government, never mind once you start including
local government.

Nothing at all to do with the Town Hall! Go to the JobCentre+ office
nearest to where you are living.

Ordinarily British Citizens are allocated a NINO automatically at about
age 16, but this happens only in respect of children where Child Benefit
is being paid. But the OP was living abroad, and thus missed out on such
automatic allocation of NINO.

Not necessarily, depends if the OP's parents were ever in receipt of Child
Benefit for the OP before moving abroad. The child is allocated a reference
number by the Child Benefit system (if I am correct) which then turns into
their NINO at a later date. NINOs are also given to the child if another
benefit is claimed for them (usually something like Disability Living
Allowance) before they turn 16.

(I'd rather not work 'cash-in-hand' as it's less easy to pay tax)
Help, please!
Contact the Town Hall in the town where you were born.
The OP is abroad or so I read, a call to the Town Hall, even if it does not
yield a number immediately, may get a transfer to the appropriate office
sooner than the procedural crap at the DWP.

I was born in the UK
I have a British Passport. I am a British Citizen.
How on earth do I get a National Insurance number?
I moved abroad when I was a baby (4 months old).
Do I just walk into a governemnt office & ask for a NI number? Does it
take weeks & weeks?
I am moving (permanently) to Boston, but want to stay here for about 11
months.

Actually slower, since all they will do is point him back at the DWP,
so the time spent contacting his local offices (Town hall would be
totally pointless anyhow) would be wasted.

I was in a similar position. Phone & ask what is required. At the
time (over 20 years ago), AFAIR I simply sent my birth certificate &
passport and was issued with an NI number & card within a few weeks.

It is much more tightly controlled now. An interview will be needed.

You may start working without such a number?

Yes! But unfortunately there are many employers out there that think
otherwise, so it could be difficult. And those employers also tend to
think, wrongly, that everyone with a NINO is allowed to work, which is
not correct. So their complacency could mean they are employing people
no longer entitled to work, and thus who are (now) illegal workers.

Help, please!
My husband recently moved over from the States. I called our local job
centre plus to make an appointment, before he arrived.
The Bristol centre was booked up for 3 months in advance!
We managed to get a slot in cardiff after 6 weeks. Its all pretty slow
but worth asking them to check other offices if yours is fully booked
too.
The appt letter tells you what to bring with you.
We were then told he would recieve his number after 4 weeks, which
actually turned into 7 weeks.
They said he could work with no NI number, but would be on a higher tax
code until it was sorted. The only problem with that was that lots of
employers wouldnt touch him without one.
Good luck

Lack of NI number makes no difference to the tax code to be used.
