BLUNDER BRANDED MAN PAEDOPHILE FOR SIX YEARS Dec 17 2004
By Geoff Lakeman
AN electrician was wrongly branded a paedophile for six nightmare
years after a council blundered.
Derek Collings, 35, was confused by officials with a convicted child sex
offender who has a similar surname.
He was abused in the street, barred from council properties and even had
his home attacked.
Yesterday he finally won an apology - but only after it was ordered by a
judge. Now Derek plans to sue for the "anguish and heartache" which
ruined his life.
He said: "It's been hell. My window was smashed, 'pervert' was written
on the side of my car and my tyres were slashed.
"I was terrified, always looking over my shoulder in fear. What price do
you put on a life ruined by this slur?"
Derek's ordeal began in 1998 when a Hampshire Council worker looked him
up on a computer after he fitted a burglar alarm in offices. The check
turned up a paedophile who lived 10 miles away.
The men have similar surnames ``but spelt differently. They have
different middle names and dates of birth.
Derek's employers were later told he was barred from properties which
held children or their records. More worryingly, the paedophile's name
in a social services file was amended so that it appeared to relate to
Derek.
In 2001 Derek, from Gosport, sued the council. He lost because the judge
said the mistake happened during efforts to protect the public. Finally,
in October a judge at Ports-mouth crown court ordered the council to say
sorry.
Hampshire social services - which had claimed "officers always acted
correctly" - told Derek in a letter: "We apologise for this mistake and
the distress you have experienced."
